BE BOLD! BE BRAVE!

I’ve talked about it before, bilingual books that have great content are so hard to come by. I promised that when I come across something great I’d come back with another round up. Recently, I was invited to the “Be Bold! Be Brave!” book launch by the author Naibe Reynoso and I had to tell you about it. This book is bilingual it is written in both English and Spanish. It rhymes and it’s translated WELL. If that wasn’t enough, this book is dedicated to the girls, our Latina daughters. Girls, like me, looking for someone that looks like them, that sounds like them to identify with.

When we walked into the beautiful release party at Chiqui Social, I was stunned. Chiqui Social is truly one of the chicest and cutest childrens’ play place I have ever seen. I still, had no idea the connection I would have to this book. We were treated to a reading by Naibe Reynoso herself. Among the selections on Bold and Brave Latina women, she read a portion of the book about Judy Baca. I immediately flashed back to when I was in college and landing the internship of my dreams working side by side with Judy Baca at SPARC. SPARC is a non-profit organization that fights to restore and maintain murals throughout the city of L.A. One of those murals being Judy’s most famous and largest mural located in the San Fernando Valley. I was lucky enough to have a physical Latina mentor in front of me through my college years, and now my daughters would have the same mentor (and so many more) through the pages of this book!

My daughters were attentive during the book reading. I wondered how much they were understanding or retaining. When Naibe got to the final BRAVE! BOLD!, Latina and it was dedicated to YOU the reader, my 3 year old turned to me with wide eyes and said “ITS ME!! I’M IN THE BOOK MOMMY!” My heart filled to the brim and I knew this was a special book that every Latina girl needs in her library. Every girl, needs to know that she too can be bold and brave, just like her sisters before her.
