Visiting Los Angeles for the first time can feel overwhelming. The city packed with “must-see” lists that make it seem possible to do everything in one trip.
It’s not.
But if you plan it right, your first visit to LA can be incredible.
This guide covers what to do on your first trip to Los Angeles, with tips for families and couples, plus what to skip so you don’t waste time sitting in traffic.
First-Time LA Tip: Location Matters More Than Anything
Los Angeles is a collection of neighborhoods, not one central city. It is also surprisingly expanse. spanning about 469 square miles, 44 miles north to south and 29 miles east to west. Where you stay will shape your entire trip.
Best areas for first-time visitors:
- Santa Monica / Westside – Beachy, walkable, great for families
- Hollywood / West Hollywood – Iconic sights, nightlife, central location
- Downtown LA – Museums, food scene, best for couples
- East Valley / Studio City – Universal Studios and close to Griffith Park
*Tip to get you started: Don’t plan more than 2–3 activities per day, and keep them in the same area. LA traffic is real.
