One of the greatest benefits of being a stay-at-home parent is the opportunity to offer children constant love, care, and attention during their formative years. However, stay-at-home parents often sacrifice careers, sleep and ambitions. Sometimes those ambitions include the urge to fight for our rights as well as the future of the family we care for. The current state of our country has me wishing I could do more. I want to fight for human rights, I want to get out and protest, but I have lunches to pack, laundry to do, dishes in the sink and kids that have an after school activity every day of the week. I want to do something more than call my representative every single day. Being at home can leave you feeling impotent and you may feel like there is nothing really powerful or meaningful you can do from home… but there is! Change doesn’t begin in the streets—it starts in your mind, in your HOME, in the choices you make for your family every day. Revolution isn’t just about grand gestures; it’s about raising your voice, educating yourself, and empowering those around you. It’s in the way you raise your children to think critically, the way you challenge injustice in conversations, and the way you refuse to be silent in the face of oppression.

Every movement in history was sparked by individuals who dared to question, to resist, to fight back in their own way. Your actions at home ripple outward, creating waves of change. The revolution doesn’t need a battlefield—it needs bold hearts and unshakable minds, just like the one you carry inside you. Yes, It starts with you! Here are a 5 simple and powerful things you can do right now to start.

Stay Informed and Educate Others

Knowledge is power! Keep up with current events, policies, and legislation by reading reliable news sources. Be aware of the heavy censoring we are experiencing. Search for news sources outside of mainstream media. Watch government proceedings, and read proposed bills and executive orders. If it’s hard to understand run it through Chat GPT and ask it to simplify it for you. Follow watchdog organizations. Share this information with friends and family through social media, blogs, or discussions to raise awareness. And last but not least, talk to your kids-the future we are fighting for is for them. Red hat ideology is not shy about expressing their hate. Don’t let them hear something on the playground, arm them with kindness and a moral compass that will give them strength and conviction if they have to speak up. Of course, the conversations I have with my second grader are not the same I would have with my high schooler. Everything in time and without spreading fear. Allow them to question and be curious. Normalize and model changing your mind when you’ve learned new information. Be aware of changing curriculum and stay actively involved with your children’s education and moral upbringing.

Build Community

Being a stay-at-home, can be isolating. Community is about connection and empowerment. It can be as small as your neighborhood or as broad as an online network of like-minded individuals. Building community will surround you with people like you to help provide emotional support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, which improves mental and emotional well-being. A united community has the power to create change, whether it’s advocating for social justice, protecting the environment, or improving local conditions. Together, people can achieve what they couldn’t alone.

Practice Civil Disobedience in Daily Life

Go on with your bad disobedient self! You can push back against government policies by making choices that align with your beliefs. Stay-at-home parents are often the main shoppers of their household. Did you know you can fight hardest with your wallet? This could mean refusing to support certain corporations and go as far as practicing self-sufficiency. Download helpful apps like Goods Unite Us to see where your dollars are going before you shop. Join economic boycotts and hold all purchases for 24 hours at a time. Trade or share what you grow in your home garden with your community. When you do need to buy, opt to support local and small businesses when you can.

Donate to or Volunteer for Advocacy Groups

Support nonprofit organizations and grassroots movements that align with your values. Many advocacy groups work to protect civil rights, environmental policies, or government transparency. Even small donations or remote volunteering (e.g., phone banking, digital marketing, or research) can make a big difference.

Support or Organize Activism

Use social media platforms to participate in or lead online campaigns. Signing and sharing petitions, joining advocacy groups, and organizing virtual protests or awareness campaigns can create significant public pressure on government officials and institutions. Help protect those that are marginalized in your community. It can suddenly be frightening leaving your home for some. Offer to run an errand or pick something up from the market to help them to avoid excess trips out. Find waze to warn your community of cold or “ICEy” conditions.

Being at home doesn’t mean you are silenced or cannot participate. Gil Scott-Heron said “The revolution will not be televised” because the revolution starts within you and at home. You can most certainly be a stay-at-home revolutionary.
